114*

On a bridge I was. Looking down to the river to see where my life flows. Darkness made it difficult to see. Yet, I did see him coming. At a distance he stood, not speaking a word, looked at me. I gazed back.

Then came he closer. Tempted, I put my arms around and gave him a generous kiss. He was tall.

Tall and strong. He held my arms firmly and pushed me back with a determined gesture. Like a street hooker who was turned down as she was trying to fix a deal, I stood empty, looking around not to see his eyes. Before he could make another gesture, I turned and passed hurriedly the bridge.

Next day, in the afternoon I found myself on the same spot. The water was blue, but still dark. I was getting suspicious whether all that had happened last night was real or my imagination. As I set on a bench, trying to remember, I heard someone sitting next to me. It was a middle-aged woman, kind of pretty.

'You know, last night I was walking the bridge' she said. 'Then a man showed up out of the blue...'
I lit my cigarette, looked at her face to show that I'm listening.
'He came close, looked straight into my eyes...' She paused, looking blank towards the water.
'And, then what?' I asked with a smile; "He kissed you?'
'No.' 'He jumped off.'
